William Don Shirley

Mr. William Don Shirley, age 75, of 1206 Lakeland Drive, Toccoa, Ga., passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at Emory University Hospital .


A son of the late Wilmer H. and Jewell Ward Shirley, he was born June 28, 1934, in Stephens County, Ga., where he lived all his life. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during the Korean War. He started his law enforcement career in 1958 with the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office. In 1973, he served as Toccoa Chief of Police. He was elected Sheriff of Stephens County in 1976 and served for 20 years. He was assistant coroner for Stephens County for 12 years. He was a 35 year member of Toccoa Kiwanis Club, member of VFW Post 4346, American Legion Post 104, Masonic Lodge 309 and Past Master, member and past President of Toccoa Shrine Club, past President of Tri-State Law Enforcement Conference and a member of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association. He was a member of Hill Street Baptist Church having served as a Trustee of the church and member of the finance committee. He was preceded in death by a daughter Sylvia Shirley Thomas.
Survivors include his wife of the home, Sue Cheek Shirley; sons and their wives, Randy and Cheryl Shirley of Martin, Ga., Herbie and Dian Shirley and Mark and Barbara Shirley both of Toccoa, Ga.; sisters Mabel Holbrooks, Edith Wilbanks and Sandra Looney, all of Toccoa, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Tracie Norman, Kevin Thomas, Adam and Heather Shirley, Dustin and Brittany Shirley, Mandy Shirley; four great-grandchildren, Brandon Thomas, Bonnie Thomas, Skylar Veal, Kyan Veal; and a number of nieces and nephews.


Funeral services were Saturday, 2 p.m. at Hill Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Garrison and the Rev. Jerrell Beatty officiating. The following served as pallbearers, Brandon Thomas, Kevin Thomas, Dustin Shirley, Wayne Shirley, Tony Shirley, David Norman, Adam Shirley and Charles Young. The following served as honorary escort, members of Toccoa Masonic Lodge 309, members of Toccoa Kiwanis Club and members of Law Enforcement.


The family was at the home and received friends at Acree-Davis Funeral Home on Friday, June 4, 2010, from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

Interment followed in Stephens Memorial Gardens with members of Hall County Sheriff’s Department serving as honor guard.

Owen Fletcher

Owen Fletcher, 78, of Indian Mound, Tenn., died Monday, May 24, 2010, at his residence.









A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, May 27) at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West, Hopkinsville, Ky., with Dennis Jones officiating.

Burial will be in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West. The remains are to be cremated. Anglin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


He was born Aug. 30, 1931, in Comanche, Texas, son of the late Ira and Nettie Acker Fletcher.

Mr. Fletcher was retired CMSGT Air Force having served 21 years during the Korean-Vietnam and Cold War Eras and served on Johnston Island Atoll with the Nuclear Missile Program.


He was the vice principal of Stewart County High School, Dover, Tenn., where he taught math for 25 years.


He was a member of the American Legion Post 104, Toccoa, Ga., VFW Post 4346, Toccoa, Ga., Air Force Sergeant Association, Nuclear Veterans Association.


He was also a member of Stewart County Volunteer Fire Department.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Laverne Fletcher.
 

Survivors include his wife, Drucilla Tucker Fletcher; children, Charles (Kathy) Fletcher, Georgetown, Texas, Michelle Barton, Hermitage, Tenn, Mona (Rick) Graham, Lansing, Kan., Moira (Bryant) Wood, Spring, Texas; stepdaughter, Meriam (Mark) Tummons, Cumberland Furnace, Tenn.; brothers, Wilburn (Collene) Fletcher, Bronte, Texas, George (Jackie) Fletcher, Eastland, Texas; brother-in-law, William Tucker, Toccoa, Ga.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
